Продолжаем рассматривать особенности грамматики, нужные для business English. В части IX освежим в памяти несколько конструкций, которые пригодятся для обмена информацией, обсуждения проблем и их решений.
1. Suggestions are often made in the form of a question. This sounds less forcefull and more polite. Here we often use modal verbs ought to, should and could:
Shouldn»t we look for another partner?
Don»t you think we have to ask Irina first?
Could we offer them a greater discount, do you think?
2. You can introduce a suggestion with the question phrase How about + -ing?
How about postponing our meeting until Monday?
3. Another way of making polite suggestions is by using I think, maybe or perhaps + a modal verb:
I think we ought to get more information on this issue.
Maybe we should ask for an opinion of someone with rich expertise.
Perhaps we could lease a machine, rather than buy one.
4. A more assertive way of making a suggestion is by using the phrase we had better +infinitive:
I think we»d better work more on the schedule.
