If you have questions Quora is likely to have answers for you, thanks to contributions of its users, which the service calls «some of the smartest people in the world.» Today we talk what exactly it is.

 

The Q&A service»s website quora.com refers to itself as «a continually improving collection of questions and answers created, edited, and organized by everyone who uses it,» a trend made popular by sites such as Wikipedia, who rely on user-generated content to succeed. «The most important thing is to have each question page become the best possible resource for someone who wants to know about the question,» Quora concludes.

Founded in 2009 by two former Facebook employees Adam D»Angelo and Charlie Cheever, Quora launched out of private beta and made its website available to the public on June 21, 2010.

 

In March 2010, Quora received funding in the amount of $11 million from Benchmark Capital, valuing the start-up at $86 million. Quora’s valuation was rumored to be more than $1 billion in February 2011. In May 2012, the privately held company raised $50 million in Series B funds, valuing the company at over $400 million and bringing their total funding to $61 million.

 

Quora released an official iPhone app on September 29, 2011 and an official Android app on September 5, 2012.

 

The service can be used as a powerful marketing tool for businesses, especially if you work in B2B segment or if your business specializes in finding solutions for certain problems. We talk about it in details in our next lessons.

Exercise

Create an account in Quora. Think on questions you raised recently and did not find answers — look for them there, see questions that are within your expertise and give answers. Your contributions you could post on Facebook page. In such a way you can promote yourself as an expert, your business as its representative and practice your English — there is no Russian or Ukrainian versions.
